Itaipava Castle: Worth a Visit or a Stay? Our Real Experience in the Mountain Region
If you’re thinking of visiting or staying at Itaipava Castle, let me talk to you as a friend.
Because when you see the photos, the impression is that you’re entering a European castle in the middle of the hills of Rio de Janeiro. Towers, shields, knights, medieval architecture… it all looks like a movie set.
And yes, the visual impact is real.
But the experience will depend a lot on what you expect.
We’ve been to Itaipava Castle twice: once just to visit and once to stay. And they were completely different experiences. There was enchantment, there was frustration, there was an adjustment of expectations – and that’s exactly what I want to tell you here.
If you’re putting together an itinerary for the mountain region, save this post. It may avoid disappointment… or confirm that it’s exactly what you’re looking for.
📍 Where Itaipava Castle is located

Itaipava Castle is located in Itaipava, a district of Petrópolis, in the charming mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro.
- 6 km from the center of Itaipava
- 27 km from the Historic Center of Petrópolis
- 20 km from Teresópolis
- 84 km from Galeão Airport

🏰 The History of Itaipava Castle

Now comes a part that many people don’t know about.
The castle was designed in 1920 by Baron J. Smith de Vasconcellos and was initially known as the “Baron’s Castle”.
The architectural project was signed by none other than Lucio Costa – the same architect who decades later would design Brasilia.
Materials came from Europe, and the construction followed Renaissance characteristics with a strong medieval influence and a classic Norman touch.
It has gained fame as the only medieval-style castle in the Americas with this specific architectural proposal.
But here’s an important point: it’s not an original historic medieval castle. It’s a 20th century construction inspired by European aesthetics.
This changes expectations.
👀 How visitation works

Yes, you can visit the Castle even if you’re not staying there.
Opening hours: every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Please note: visits need to be confirmed in advance and may be suspended on days of events and festivals. And here’s the honest part: the visit is contemplative and relatively quick. You get to see the outside areas and some of the inside spaces, depending on availability. There’s no in-depth historical tour or structured museum. If you’re passing through Itaipava, it’s worth a stop.
But it’s not worth traveling just for that.
🚗 How to get to Itaipava Castle
Access is simple via the BR-040 highway. Putting “Castelo de Itaipava” into your GPS will get you there without difficulty. There is parking on site. From Rio, the journey takes about 1h30 (without traffic). Public transportation is not practical. A car is ideal.
🏰 Our first experience: just a visit
When we went just to visit, we were full of expectation. The arrival is truly impressive. The façade is imposing, the towers are beautiful and the photos are incredible. But after the first half hour, you’ve already seen practically everything you can access.
Was it nice? Yes.
Was it impactful? Yes.
Was it a long experience? No.
And it was there that we realized that the Castle works better as an accommodation or event than as a stand-alone tourist attraction.
🛏️ Second experience: accommodation
When we went back to stay, the experience was different. At night, the illuminated Castle is much more beautiful. The silence of the mountains helps to create an intimate atmosphere. You enjoy it more calmly, without the feeling of a quick visit.
🛌 What are the rooms like at Castelo de Itaipava?

Now let’s talk about the part that really matters when we decide to stay: the room.
I’ll be quite honest with you.
The rooms at the Castelo de Itaipava follow the classic style that matches the hotel’s medieval proposal. High headboards, traditional furniture, yellowish lighting and details that recall something more ancient and aristocratic.
Is it pretty? Yes.
Is it comfortable? Yes.
Is it a five-star hotel with contemporary design and extreme luxury? No.
And here it’s important to adjust expectations.
The rooms are comfortable, clean and functional. The bed is good, the bedding is adequate and the bathroom is well equipped. But the finishes and modernity are not the hotel’s strong point.
It’s the kind of accommodation that appeals when you get into the mood of the castle. If you’re expecting something ultra-sophisticated, you may find it simple.
🏰 Room categories at Castelo de Itaipava
The hotel has several categories – from simple options to more complete suites with whirlpool baths.
I’ll summarize the main ones so you can understand the difference:
- Tower Suite (Master) – One of the most exclusive. Inner circular shape, high ceilings and bathtub/shower. There are only two units and they are usually highly sought after.
- Imperial Suite – The largest suite in the hotel. Spacious and with a bathtub. It is the most popular.
- Baron’s Suite – Spacious, with workstation and hydromassage. Often used by event guests.
- Suite do Conde – Very popular with honeymooners. It has a hydromassage bath.
- Squire / Samurai / Junior Suite – Entry-level categories with the best value for money.
- Royal Family / Lord – Ideal for up to 3 or 4 people.
⚠️ Important point: on event days, especially weddings, some suites may suffer from sound reflections. It’s worth checking before booking if you want a quieter stay.
🛁 Hydromassage: is it worth it?
If you like bathtubs, it’s worth investing in categories that offer hydro.
Especially for couples, it really changes the experience.
Corridors and internal atmosphere
One thing I found interesting was the interior setting. Stairs, chandeliers, stone corridors… it really creates a different atmosphere.
If you want to get a better look inside, I also recorded a video showing the corridors:

This part helps a lot to understand whether you will like the style or find it too dark/different.
🐾 Pet friendly?
Yes.
The Castle accepts pets up to 10 kg for an additional fee (on average R$99 per day, payable at check-in).
For those traveling with a small pet, this is a plus.
☕ Breakfast
Breakfast is buffet style and is good enough to start the day in the mountains.
💬 My real feeling about the rooms
If I had to sum it up:
The rooms are in keeping with the castle’s theme. They’re pleasant, but they’re not the highlight of the experience. The highlight is the setting. The room fulfills its role.
🏊 Swimming pool: a sore point
The pool is charming. But it’s small for the size of the expectation created by the grandeur of the façade. If you’re looking for a resort structure, you may be frustrated.

🍽 Restaurant

The restaurant is beautiful and matches the theme. However, the menu is very limited. We felt it lacked more variety for those staying more than one night. Our suggestion: having dinner in the center of Itaipava can enrich the experience.
🎉 Events: here it shines

For weddings and parties, the Castle really makes sense. The setting is cinematic. If the idea is an event, it impresses.
🤔 Who is Itaipava Castle worth it for?
It’s worth a lot:
- Couples who want something different
- Romantic weekend
- Photo shoots
- Events
It may not be ideal for:
- Those looking for a complete resort
- Who wants ample leisure
- Who expects deep historical experience
🏨 Comparison with other hotels in Itaipava
Now comes a common question from those planning to stay in the region:
Is the Castelo de Itaipava or another hotel in Itaipava worth it?
If you’re looking for a themed experience, medieval architecture and an environment geared towards events and gastronomy, the Itaipava Castle makes the most sense.
But if your priority is a more extensive leisure structure, a resort atmosphere, chalets, larger pools and a spa, perhaps Quinta da Paz Resort is an alternative more in line with what you’re looking for.
📍 Castelo de Itaipava x Quinta da Paz Resort
- Castelo de Itaipava – Focuses on themed accommodation, events, weddings and gastronomy. Charming structure, but with more limited leisure facilities.
- Quinta da Paz Resort – A resort focused on leisure, nature, independent chalets, a spa and a more extensive structure.
Although they are in the same region (about 6 km apart), they are separate properties with their own administrations.
⚠️ Important: booking at Castelo de Itaipava does not automatically guarantee access to the Quinta da Paz Resort.
Some hotels in the “Hotéis by Castelo de Itaipava” chain may have specific conditions, but this needs to be confirmed directly with the reservations center.
If you’d like to confirm details about possible integrations between units, Castelo’s telephone number is:
📞 0800 799 9925
👀 About visitation
Itaipava Castle is open to the public (with prior confirmation), while Quinta da Paz is exclusively focused on lodging.
The Castle’s amusement park does not charge admission, but the rides are paid for separately.
💰 Always compare values before deciding
Prices vary greatly depending on the date, category and events in the region.
That’s why I always recommend comparing before closing:
👉 Check availability and compare prices on Booking
Sometimes the difference between categories or even between hotels is smaller than it seems.
📅 Best time to go
Autumn and winter are ideal. The mountain climate blends perfectly with the medieval proposal.
💰 Average values
Daily rates vary between R$400 and R$900, depending on the season. Holidays and high season are much higher.
💬 Our honest opinion

The Castelo de Itaipava is different. And sometimes you don’t want the best hotel in the mountains – you want the most different. If you adjust your expectations, you may like it a lot. If you expect absolute luxury or a complete resort, you may be frustrated. For us, it was worth it for the themed experience.
