While everyone is rushing to the beach or to the classic tourist spots, there is a green refuge hidden away in the South Zone that blends nature, history and silence. And silence in Rio, my friend… is luxury.

🏛️ What do you find inside?

The city’s historical museum is housed in a beautiful colonial mansion, surrounded by gardens and Atlantic forest.

Inside you’ll find

  • Historical photographs of Rio

  • Sculptures and antique works

  • Explanatory panels, such as the meaning of the name Ipanema

It’s that kind of quiet walk, with no crowds, no queues and no rush.

📚 Complete information about the City Park

The City’s Municipal Natural Park, known as Parque da Gávea, is a Conservation Unit created in 1941 and covers approximately 470,000 square meters.

Part of the area is made up of preserved Atlantic forest – an extension of the Tijuca Forest – and another part of large grassy gardens, cut by small streams that form a lake with an island.

It was once the summer residence of the Marquis of São Vicente. The house, built in 1809, now houses the City History Museum, which has undergone restoration work in recent years.

In the middle of all this greenery is the City Museum, housed in a beautiful colonial mansion.

I confess: I went with no great expectations.
But when I started looking at the old photos of Rio, the models and the historical documents… I found myself traveling back in time.

You begin to realize how the city has changed. How it has grown. How it has transformed. It’s a quiet, unhurried walk. No crowds. No rush.

You know what I always say: this city isn’t just about the beach.

And the City Museum proves it.

🏛️ A little history of the City Park

The land on which the City’s Municipal Natural Park now stands dates back to the 19th century. The mansion that houses the city’s Historical Museum was built around 1809 and was part of the old Chácara do Morro Queimado.

Over the years, the property passed through different important owners in Brazilian history, including the Marquis of São Vicente and the Count of Santa Marinha. For a long time, the place was used as a summer residence, taking advantage of the cooler climate in the Gávea region.

In 1939, the property was taken over by the government and, a few years later, turned into a municipal park. In 1948, the city’s Historical Museum was moved to the site, consolidating the space as a cultural center and environmental preservation area.

The museum’s collection brings together thousands of pieces that help tell the story of Rio de Janeiro’s evolution – including sculptures, paintings, antique furniture and historical records of the city.

Today, as well as being an important point of memory for Rio de Janeiro, the park also serves as a preservation area for the Atlantic Forest and an extension of the Tijuca Forest.

☕ Café Épico: the tour’s tastiest secret

After a leisurely exploration of the city’s historical museum, I went down to the Café Épico, which is located in the park itself.

And look… it’s there that the walk takes on another layer.

The atmosphere is integrated into the garden, with that tranquil Gávea atmosphere that seems to slow down time. No loud music, no rushing around. Just the sound of the trees, people chatting quietly and the smell of fresh coffee in the air.

The Café Épico is open from Thursday to Sunday and on public holidays from 9am to 4pm, exactly the same time as the museum.

Address: Estrada de Santa Marinha, s/n – inside the City History Museum.

If I can give you a tip: take your time and set aside at least 30 minutes just to enjoy the café. Sometimes this is the best moment of the tour.

For updates and special events, follow the official channels:

🥐 What to order at Café Épico?

If you just want a quick coffee, a traditional espresso will set you back around R$10.

But if the idea is to turn the visit into a complete experience, the highlight is the Complete Brunch, served throughout the day:

  • Two drinks (hot or cold)
  • Cup of yogurt
  • Cheese breads
  • Slice of homemade cake
  • Fruit salad
  • Stuffed omelettes
  • Portion of cold cuts
  • Petrópolis toast with jam and butter

Approximate value: R$169.90.

The menu also includes specialty coffees (Hario V60, French press, cold brew), signature drinks such as the Expresso Martini, the famous S’Mores Martini and refreshing options such as Expresso Tonic and Mazagran.

In other words: you can go just for the coffee – even if you already know the museum.

🚗 Is it easy to get there? Yes, and that helps a lot

💬 My honest opinion

The City’s Municipal Natural Park doesn’t usually appear on lists of “must-sees in Rio”.
It’s not a postcard.
It’s not a tourist hotspot.

And maybe that’s exactly why it’s so special.

There, Rio slows down.
The green dominates.
Time seems to move differently.

It’s a side of the city that almost nobody shows: the historic Rio, silent, full of memories and surrounded by Atlantic forest.

It’s not a tour for those who want to get busy.
It’s for those who want to breathe.

And when you discover a place like this, a curious thing happens:
makes you want to recommend it to everyone.

But at the same time… it makes you want to keep it all to yourself.
