We visited the Inconfidência Winery, located between Paraíba do Sul and Itaipava (Petrópolis), and left genuinely surprised. It’s not just a tasting. It’s a different, relaxed, intimate excursion and perfect for those who want to escape the obvious on Serra Fluminense.

Right at the entrance, that rustic wooden sign already sets the mood. The landscape is beautiful. Mountains in the background, quiet, countryside air.

It doesn’t feel like you’re just a few hours from the capital.

It’s that kind of outing perfect for couples, friends or even to surprise someone on a different weekend.

🍇 The History of Inconfidência Winery: From Dream to RJ’s First Integrated Winery

Experience in the vineyard

Before talking about the tasting, it’s worth understanding why Inconfidência Winery is so special.

It didn’t come out of nowhere.

Over more than 30 years, the Aranha family had been accumulating experience in soil management and agricultural production. Coffee, pumpkins, cheese, milk, beans… the land has always been part of their history.

But the question that changed everything was simple:

If vines produce grapes in regions as diverse as the world, why couldn’t they produce quality wines here in Serra Fluminense?

And that’s where the dream began.

🔬 Research and Planning: Nothing Was By Chance

Before planting the first sapling, the family toured wineries, studied technologies and sought technical references.

It was then that they found the work of agronomist Murillo Albuquerque Regina, expert in viticulture and researcher of the inverted cycle, developed in the Mantiqueira region of Minas Gerais (Caldas – MG).

This revolutionary technique uses two strategic pruning cuts:

  • First pruning in August
  • Second pruning in January

With that, the harvest takes place in winter — the driest and ideal period for high-quality grapes in Brazil.

From 2010, with the technical support of Vitácea Brasil and EPAMIG (Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais), and with the participation of oenologist Isabela Peregrino, a 10-year plan was developed for winemaking to take place within the property.

Nothing improvised.
All structured.

🌱 The Planting of the Vines

European varieties of the species Vitis Vinifera were planted, known for producing fine wines.

Among them:

🍷 Reds

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Merlot
  • Syrah

🍇 Whites

  • Sauvignon Blanc

And subsequently, experimentally:

  • Petit Verdot
  • Nero d’Avola
  • Viognier

From 2013 onward, the first vines began to produce. And little by little, Inconfidência labels began to be tasted by enologists, sommeliers and discerning enthusiasts.

It was the beginning of an elegant journey.

🏭 The Turning Point: In-House Winemaking

In 2018, the winemaking unit was completed.

And in 2019, Inconfidência Winery began producing its own wines on the property.

This was a watershed moment.

With equipment installed beside the vineyard rows, quality control became even more stringent, under the technical care of oenologist Mario Lucas dos Santos Ieggli and agronomist Frederico Alcântara Novelli Dias.

It was at that moment that it consolidated itself as the first integrated winery in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

📈 The Current Moment

Today, the winery has approximately:

  • 22 thousand vines planted
  • 14 thousand in full production
  • 6 thousand gradually entering production
  • Others still in a young stage

This growth shows that the project was not just an experiment — it was a long-term vision.

🎯 What Impresses Most

During our visit, it became very clear that there is planning, study and real investment there.

It’s not a ‘tourist winery set up for photos’.

It’s a serious agricultural project that became an experience.

And this completely changes the perception of the tour.

🍇 The Vineyard Tour

The visit begins with the sommelier’s explanation. Then we move to the vines.

They use the inverted cycle technique, which allows harvesting grapes in winter — something that revolutionized wine production in the Southeast.

Walking between the rows of vines was one of the most beautiful parts of the experience. The view is wide, open, photogenic.

And yes, it yields beautiful photos.

🍷 The Tasting

After the outdoor tour, we proceed to the tasting.

We tasted three labels from the house. The explanation is technical, but accessible. It’s not that stiff and overly formal tasting.

The produced labels include:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Merlot
  • Syrah
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Viognier
  • Petit Verdot
  • Nero d’Avola

Production has been in-house since 2019, making Inconfidência Winery the first integrated winery in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

🎯 Worth It?

Yes. Especially if you:

✔ You already know the traditional sights of Petrópolis
✔ Want to do something different
✔ You like wine
✔ Looking for a quieter outing

It’s not a ‘cheap’ outing, but it delivers exclusivity and experience.
