The history of Proa Kitchen Bar

The restaurant was created by chef Joana Carvalho, who is also known for her restaurant Jojö Bistrô in Horto. The idea for Proa was born out of the desire to create a restaurant where the sea was the protagonist of the gastronomic experience.
The very name “Proa” refers to the front of a boat, reinforcing the maritime concept of the house.
From the outset, the restaurant has sought to work with fresh ingredients, favoring quality fish and respecting the seasonality of the sea.
This philosophy appears not only in the menu, but also in the way the dishes are presented: simple, elegant and focused on the flavor of the ingredients.
Environment and decoration
When you arrive at Proa Cozinha Bar, your first impression is of a charming and welcoming restaurant.
The décor mixes nautical elements with a contemporary style. Wood, soft lighting and details reminiscent of the maritime universe help create an atmosphere reminiscent of seaside restaurants.
The space is divided into different environments:
- Main hall
- Outdoor area
- Balcony on the second floor
This terrace, by the way, is one of the most pleasant places in the restaurant, especially at night.
There, the atmosphere is quieter, with soft lighting and tables ideal for a more relaxed dinner.
Atmosphere of Baixo Gávea

Part of the experience of visiting Proa is also linked to the neighborhood.
Baixo Gávea is one of Rio’s most traditional nightlife spots. The area is home to bars, restaurants and lots of people roaming the streets, creating a vibrant and relaxed atmosphere.
It’s common to see groups of friends gathered together, people drinking draft beer at the outside tables and a constant movement throughout the night.
That’s why a visit to Proa Cozinha Bar can easily be combined with a gastronomic tour of the region.

Our experience at Proa Kitchen Bar
Our visit to the restaurant was excellent.
We asked:
- Fresh oysters
- Melting octopus
- Shrimp risotto
- Soft drinks
The octopus was extremely tender and very well seasoned. The prawn risotto was also delicious, with an intense seafood flavor.

The service was quick and very friendly.
In total, our bill came to around R$170 for two people, which we consider to be good value for money for the region.

Commitment to fresh ingredients
One of the pillars of Proa’s cuisine is working with fresh fish and quality ingredients.
Many of the fish and seafood used on the menu arrive at the restaurant practically every day, guaranteeing a much better taste and texture than frozen products.
This concern for the quality of the ingredients makes a big difference to the final result of the dishes.
This is especially evident in recipes with shrimp, octopus and fresh fish.
