Dida Bar in Rio: Is it worth visiting Lapa’s African restaurant?

Dida Bar in Rio: an African restaurant for trying something different
Rio has plenty of beautiful restaurants, lively bars and places with good food. But not every place has personality. Dida Bar e Restaurante does.
We went to Dida Bar in July, and the first impression was already striking: warm lighting, masks on the walls, African references, neon in the dining room, colorful cocktails and an energy that suits Rio’s nightlife perfectly. It doesn’t feel like a restaurant created just for photos; it feels like a place with history, knowledge and purpose.
The restaurant’s concept is to showcase Africa through gastronomy. This comes through in the menu, in dishes inspired by Angola, Nigeria, Mozambique, Kenya, Namibia, the Congo and South Africa, in the cultural program and in the way the setting reflects Afro-Brazilian heritage.
The restaurant’s own profile describes it as Cultural, Gastronomic and Intangible Heritage of Rio, and the phrase makes sense when you are there: Dida doesn’t just sell food; it offers context, memory, music and a dining experience.

What is the atmosphere like at Dida Bar?

The atmosphere is one of the highlights. The lighting is low, with warm reddish tones. African masks on the walls and a neon outline of the African continent create a highly distinctive mood.
It is a restaurant that works well for photos, but it does not rely on that alone. The decor is consistent with the cuisine and the cultural program. Everything seems to be speaking the same language: Africa, the diaspora, music, Rio and food.
For couples, it is a good choice for a different kind of dinner. It also works well for groups of friends, especially if you go on a night with live music. For travelers, it is an interesting way to discover a side of Rio beyond the beach, Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain.
What should you order at Dida Bar?
The menu is extensive. It includes starters, snacks, African dishes, Afro-Brazilian dishes, vegan options, desserts, signature cocktails, beer and wine. The best strategy is not to automatically choose the most famous dish. The fun of Dida lies precisely in trying something you may not find at other restaurants in Rio.
Starters and snacks

To start, the menu includes options such as Brasileirinho, with mini feijoada fritters, mini acarajé and mini baião de dois; Tesouro do Mar, with seafood, a stuffed mussel and a shrimp-and-banana skewer; pastries filled with shrimp, shellfish, queijo minas and roast beef; as well as feijoada fritters and acarajé.
In our experience, the shrimp starter arrived looking beautiful and colorful, like a dish designed to open the evening. It is the kind of order that pairs well with a cocktail and immediately sets the table in the mood of the restaurant.
African dishes

The most interesting part of the menu is the African dishes. Some examples include:
- Arroz Jollof com camarões grelhados, a Nigerian specialty;
- Feijão Nigeriano, with black-eyed peas, smoked shrimp, dendê oil and mildly spicy beef;
- Kruger, pork ribs with spices, spicy guava sauce and rustic potatoes;
- Nairóbi Camarão, breaded shrimp with lemon rice, inspired by Kenya;
- Calulu de Carne Seca, an Angolan dish with dried beef, okra, eggplant and funge;
- Luderitz de Camarão e Mariscos, inspired by Namibia;
- Tocossado, inspired by Mozambique, with dried shrimp, mussels, cashews and shrimp sauce;
- Carril de Camarão, with paprika, cumin, coconut milk, dendê oil and dendê farofa;
- Mufete, an Angolan dish with grilled fish, palm-oil beans, cassava, plantain, sweet potato and vinaigrette sauce.
If you enjoy seafood, you will find plenty of options. If you prefer meat, the dishes with dried beef and ribs are good choices. If you want a more symbolic experience of the restaurant, Mufete stands out as a classic Angolan dish presented as a feast.
Afro-Brazilian dishes
Dida also serves more familiar dishes for those who want to ease into the concept: shrimp bobó, baião de dois, feijoada with premium cuts of meat, feijoada for one and a kids’ dish, subject to availability.
This section works well for a table with different tastes. One person can order something more familiar while someone else tries a less conventional African dish.
Vegetarian and vegan options
One positive point: there are meat-free options that feel like full-fledged dishes. The menu we consulted includes vegan feijoada fritters, vegan Tocossado with cashews and mango, vegetable Calulu and banana moqueca.
And what about the cocktails?
The cocktails pair beautifully with the setting. In the photos from our visit, they looked great against the warm lighting and neon in the background. But it is not just about appearances: the menu includes some good signature creations.
The house cocktails include Gin da Dida, with tangerine, pineapple, spices, juniper, cucumber, rosemary and smoked cinnamon; Dawa da Casa, with gin, house mate tea, Tahiti lime and ginger foam; Flor de Goiabeira, with cascão guava paste, gin and Sicilian lemon; Onilê, with gold cachaça, basil, Sicilian lemon, citrus foam and honey; and Nala, with dragon fruit, mint and watermelon vodka.
My suggestion is simple: if it is your first time at Dida, order at least one signature cocktail. It suits the experience better than going straight for the classics.
How much does it cost to eat at Dida Bar?
Based on the menu consulted in July 2026, Dida falls in the mid-to-high price range, depending on what you order. It is not a restaurant for “grabbing a quick bite”; it is more of a complete experience.
- Executive lunch, Tuesday to Friday: between R$ 50 and R$ 60;
- Single pastry: between R$ 12 and R$ 14;
- Individual feijoada fritter: R$ 26;
- Acarajé: R$ 50;
- Arroz Jollof com camarões: R$ 67;
- Calulu de Carne Seca: R$ 66;
- Carril de Camarão: R$ 70;
- Tocossado with dried shrimp and mussels: R$ 78;
- Banana moqueca: R$ 57;
- Signature cocktails: generally between R$ 20 and R$ 38;
- Desserts: between R$ 12 and R$ 18.
For a dinner with a starter, main course and cocktail, I would budget around R$ 120 to R$ 180 per person, depending on your choices. You can spend less by sharing a starter or choosing the executive lunch during the week. You can also spend more by ordering a large dish, wine or several cocktails.
Cultural program
Dida Bar also has a strong cultural focus. The program during our visit included nights such as Jantar Africano, Sambada Dida, MPB / Música Preta Brasileira, Samba Jazz and Samba.
Since the program changes, check Instagram before making a reservation. But here is a tip: if you can, choose a night with music. It adds another layer to the atmosphere.
Who is Dida Bar a good choice for?
I would recommend Dida to anyone looking for an African restaurant in Rio, anyone who enjoys food with a story, couples looking for a different kind of dinner, groups of friends and travelers who want to discover a more cultural side of the city.
It is also a great tip for Cariocas who keep saying they “already know everything in Rio.” They probably do not, and Dida is good proof of that.
Our thoughts on the visit
The experience was more than simply going to a restaurant. The food has presence, the dining room has personality and the cocktails help shape the evening. Dida is the kind of place that makes sense in a city like Rio because it brings together gastronomy, music, memory, bohemian spirit and identity.
It is not a neutral restaurant. And that is a good thing. It has a point of view, a concept and a wealth of references. As part of an itinerary through Centro or Lapa, I would consider Dida a strong option for ending the day with dinner and culture.
Is it worth going to Dida Bar?
Yes. It is especially worthwhile if you want to move beyond the usual itinerary and experience a restaurant with an African and Afro-Brazilian identity in Rio.
My suggestion for a first visit: take your time, check the program on Instagram, order a starter to share, choose an African dish as your main course and finish with a signature cocktail.
Dida is one of those places that remind you that Rio can also be discovered at the table.
