Right at the entrance, that rustic wooden sign sets the mood. The landscape is beautiful. Mountains in the background, silence, country air.

It doesn’t seem like you’re only a few hours from the capital.

It’s the perfect outing for couples, friends or even to surprise someone on a different weekend.

If you want to put together a complete weekend, I recommend combining it with accommodation in Itaipava. In fact, check out our tips on where to stay:

🍇 The History of Vinícola Inconfidência: From Dream to RJ’s First Integrated Winery

Experience in the vineyard

Before talking about the tasting, it’s worth understanding why Vinícola Inconfidência is so special.

It didn’t come out of nowhere.

Over more than 30 years, the Aranha family has accumulated experience in soil management and agricultural production. Coffee, pumpkins, cheese, milk, beans… the land has always been part of their history.

But the question that changed everything was simple:

If grapevines produce grapes in such diverse regions of the world, why couldn’t they produce quality wines here in the Serra Fluminense?

And that’s when the dream began.

🔬 Research and Planning: Nothing Was By Chance

Before planting the first sapling, the family visited wineries, studied technologies and looked for technical references.

It was then that they came across the work of agronomist Murillo Albuquerque Regina, a specialist in viticulture and researcher of the reverse cycle technique, developed in the Mantiqueira region of Minas Gerais (Caldas – MG).

This revolutionary technique uses two strategic prunings:

  • First pruning in August
  • Second pruning in January

As a result, the harvest takes place in winter – a drier period and ideal for high-quality grapes in Brazil.

Starting in 2010, with technical support from Vitácea Brasil and EPAMIG (Minas Gerais Agricultural Research Company), and with the participation of winemaker Isabela Peregrino, a 10-year plan was developed for winemaking to take place on the property itself.

Nothing improvised.
Everything structured.

🌱 Planting the grapevines

European varieties of the Vitis Vinifera species, known for producing fine wines, were planted.

Among them:

🍷 Reds

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Merlot
  • Syrah

🍇 White

  • Sauvignon Blanc

And later, experimentally:

  • Petit Verdot
  • Nero d’Avola
  • Viognier

The first vines started producing in 2013. And little by little, Inconfidência’s labels began to be tasted by oenologists, sommeliers and demanding connoisseurs.

It was the start of an elegant career.

🏭 The turning point: self-winemaking

In 2018, the construction of the winemaking unit was completed.

And in 2019, Vinícola Inconfidência started producing its own wines on the property.

That was a turning point.

With equipment installed next to the vineyard, quality control has become even stricter, under the technical care of oenologist Mario Lucas dos Santos Ieggli and agronomist Frederico Alcântara Novelli Dias.

It was then that it established itself as the first integrated winery in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

📈 The Current Moment

Today, the winery has approximately:

  • 22,000 vines planted
  • 14,000 in full production
  • 6,000 that went into production progressively
  • Others are still young

This growth shows that the project wasn’t just an experiment – it was a long-term vision.

🎯 What Impresses Most

During our visit, it became very clear that there is planning, study and real investment.

It’s not a “tourist winery set up for photos”.

It’s a serious agricultural project that has become an experiment.

And that completely changes the perception of the tour.

🍇 The Vineyard Tour

The tour begins with an explanation from the sommelier. Then we head to the vineyards.

They use the reverse cycle technique, which allows them to harvest grapes in winter – something that has revolutionized wine production in the Southeast.

Walking among the rows of grapevines was one of the most beautiful parts of the experience. The view is wide, open and photogenic.

And yes, it makes for beautiful photos.

🍷 The Tasting

After the external tour, we went on to the tasting.

We tasted three of the house’s labels. The explanation is technical but accessible. It’s not a stiff, formal tasting.

The labels produced include:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Merlot
  • Syrah
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Viognier
  • Petit Verdot
  • Nero d’Avola

Production has been in-house since 2019, making Vinícola Inconfidência the first integrated winery in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

🎯 Is it worth it?

Yes. Especially if you:

✔ You already know the traditional sights of Petrópolis
✔ You want to do something different
✔ You like wine
✔ You’re looking for a quieter walk

It’s not a “cheap” tour, but it delivers exclusivity and experience.
