Yayá Comidaria: A Journey Through the Ancestral Flavors of Bahia in the Heart of Rio
If you’re looking for a different restaurant in Rio de Janeiro — one that’s not just about eating, but about having an experience — you can save this name: Yayá Comidaria.
More than a restaurant, Yayá is a true dive into Afro-Brazilian culture. Each dish tells a story, each ingredient carries memory, and every detail of the atmosphere connects you with something much bigger than a simple meal.
We visited the restaurant in 2024 and I’ll say in advance: it was one of the most memorable gastronomic experiences we’ve had in Rio.

Our experience at Yayá Comidaria
First impressions: a place that embraces you
On arrival, you can already tell that Yayá isn’t an ordinary restaurant. It operates in a charming house, with Afro-Brazilian decor, warm lighting and an intimate vibe that makes you naturally slow down.
The soundtrack, the aromas from the kitchen, and the friendly service create an extremely engaging atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you don’t rush to leave.
Why we chose Yayá
We found Yayá by recommendation and also because of chef Andressa Cabral’s story, who does amazing work rescuing Afro-Brazilian cuisine.
Additionally, we took advantage of using Duo Gourmet, which made all the difference — we could try more dishes and save money.
Yayá’s proposition: food with history
Origins on the ganhadeiras’ trays
Yayá’s foundation rests on the history of the ganhadeiras — Black women who sold food on the streets and often were able to buy their freedom with this work.
This inheritance isn’t just in the concept: it’s in the flavor, the presentation, and the way the dishes are conceived.
A kitchen that rescues and reinvents
Chef Andressa Cabral manages to do something rare: deeply respecting the roots while bringing a contemporary reading of the dishes.
O resultado é uma cozinha afetiva, potente e extremamente original.
What we ordered (and it’s REALLY WORTH IT)
Patota de Cosme – BRL 38
This was one of the most interesting dishes of the night. Inspired by the Ibeji festivities, it features a combination of vatapá, caruru, omolokum, acaçá and mini acarajé.
It’s practically a summary of Afro-Brazilian cuisine in one dish.
Shrimp bobó – BRL 189 (serves 2)
No exaggeration: one of the best bobós we’ve ever had.
Extremely creamy, well-seasoned and served with rice, farofa and a canjiquinha that is surprisingly good.
Perfect for sharing — especially if you’re using Duo Gourmet.
Canjiquinha with meat
It was a total surprise. Creamy, with a light smoky touch and extremely comforting. One of those sides you don’t expect much, but it leaves a mark.
